Using the Rule of Three for Learning

In math, the Rule of Three is a method of finding a ratio. In English essay writing, the Rule of Three states that things are more interesting to read in triads. In presentations, the Rule of Three comes in handy to keep the audience engaged, and in entertainment, the idea of trebling makes jokes and gags funnier.

Developing Learner Autonomy

There are many different ways to think about our goals as teachers; what it is we hope to achieve with our students. We can talk about learning objectives for each lesson, about curriculum targets, or we can talk about grades. We can even talk about the non-academic goals we have for developing our students as members of society.

Student-centered teaching is teaching designed for the student. This means that planning often begins with the student in mind as opposed to a school policy or curriculum artifact, for example. Done well, it can disarm some of the more intimidating parts of academia, while also shortening the distance between the student and understanding.
